Rokurou is a Daemon similar in nature to Velvet, but nowhere near as powerful. He doesn’t have free will and has trouble fitting in, but slowly begins to develop his own personality as the story progresses. Number Two (which I won’t spoil his name since it is a major event in Berseria) is a Malak that Velvet kidnaps from the first town they visit. Velvet herself is an interesting main protagonist, and is the first solo female main character that Bandai Namco has done for Tales (Milla was not a solo character, since she shared the role with Jude). The supporting cast and group of characters Velvet will interact with throughout the story is perhaps the best the series has seen to date. You are basically playing through the game as the bad guys, disrupting the world and taking down key figures. That ends up being one of the most unique aspects of Berseria. She doesn’t care how she does it or who she has to go through in order to complete this mission. Velvet spends three years locked away in a jail on an island, and when she finally breaks free (with the help of Artorius’ ex-Malakim, Seres) she sets off to find Artorius and make him pay for the murder and sacrifice of her brother. He shoves her down into the abyss as well, but somehow she is rejected and gets turned into a Therion, a much more advanced form that actually feeds on Daemons. Thus, the events of Tales of Berseria begin. Velvet snaps and goes insane, attempting to take out Artorius. Velvet frantically runs off searching for Artorius and Laphicet, and when she finds them, she witnesses Artorius sacrifice her brother to the world in order to stop the Daemonblight. When the entire village falls ill and eventually contracts the Daemonblight disease, they all turn into werewolves and are killed. The story in Tales of Berseria begins a few years after those events, but they are constantly referred back on, especially during the opening hour or two of the game.Unfortunately, the Scarlet Night is upon the world of Midgand once again. Velvet and her brother Laphicet were living with and being brought up by her brother-in-law, Artorius Collbrande, after he saved them during an event known as the Scarlet Night, which ultimately killed his wife and Velvet’s older sister, Celica. One of the main things you’ll notice almost immediately is that Berseria is much darker than normal. Tales of Berseria is a revenge story, dealing with Velvet Crowe, the protagonist of the game. That can absolutely be said about the latest release from Bandai Namco, Tales of Berseria. Sure, there have been some misses here and there with a few of the games, but for the most part, I always enjoy my time with each new entry. It is undeniably one of my favorite roleplaying game franchises on the market. There’s something about the Tales of games that speak to my soul.
